Who I am

I am Dr. Jahnelle Howe (Ph.D.), a climate and environmental scientist passionate about blue carbon ecosystems, marine biogeochemistry, and tropical coastal resilience. My research focuses on how mangroves sequester and store carbon, and how climate change, hurricanes, and heavy metal contamination affect their ability to help mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

I’ve had the privilege of working with organizations like NOAA, Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), and private sector partners to develop protocols for carbon accounting, ecosystem restoration, and climate adaptation. My work has contributed to science-driven coastal protection policies in the Caribbean, especially in Puerto Rico, and continues to shape the way we think about ecosystem-based climate solutions.

I’ve authored peer-reviewed publications on blue carbon, remote sensing, and heavy metal contamination in mangroves, and I’ve presented my research at international conferences and policy forums. I also serve as a consultant on marine carbon crediting frameworks, where I translate science into actionable strategies that connect ecosystem health, climate resilience, and global carbon markets.

Outside of my research, I’m also a poet and storyteller, and I believe that creative expression is a powerful way to make science more accessible and meaningful.

At the heart of everything I do is the goal of bridging science and policy to build a more resilient and sustainable future for coastal communities worldwide.
